Theodore, Evelyn, Josephine, and...

We are expecting baby #4, a sister for Theodore, Evelyn, and Josephine. We have a few names we like, listed below. Suggestions are also very much appreciated, if you have any! We prefer traditional names, preferably something with 3 syllables, but it definitely doesn't have to be. Thank you so much in advance for your thoughts and opinions :)

Current favorites:

-Annemarie

-Annamarie

三级片电影网站-Clara

-Madeline or Madeleine

-Lydia

-Catherine

三级片电影网站-Rosamund (too much for a little girl?)

-Margaret

-Lucile (I personally prefer this spelling to Lucille)

三级片电影网站I love Annemarie.  I also love Anne- Marie.  Other favorites are Catherine, Clara, Lydia, and Margaret.  Rosamund just doesn't sound pretty to me.  I am not a fan of Lucile either.  It seems like an old name, but not a classic name.  Just mid-century, Lucille Ball associations for me.

With the ending of the "n" sound in both Evelyn and Josephine (awesome names btw--love Theodore too), I'm of two minds. I love how they each have their own first initial, so any suggestions I give will keep to that also.

1) 3rd girl needs to also end in the "n" sound which narrows you down to Madeline/Madeleine (which pronunciation are you going for?) and Catherine from this list. I would prefer something with a slightly different sound to the "n" ending. Catherine doesn't quite do that for me (similar ending sound as Evelyn despite the "r" before the "in" sound--some letters work better with this). Mad-uh-LINE works along this line of thought, but MAD-uh-lyn doesn't.
三级片电影网站Other ideas along this line: Caroline, Coraline, Allison, Gillian (although this starts with the same sound as Josephine), Imogen, Lillian (although this sounds slightly sing-songy to me with Evelyn), Marian, Rhiannon, Vivian/Vivienne, Adeline, Maryanne, Maryjane

2) Purposely avoid the "n" ending. I'm not digging Annemarie or Annamarie with your other daughters' names (although if there is a family reason, that trumps it). Clara and Lucile don't have the prerequisite 3+ syllables. That leaves us with Lydia, Rosamund, and Margaret. I'm not quite feeling the vibe with Margaret with this sibset, despite it being one of my favorites. I think because you have a Josephine, it makes me think of Little Women especially since Laurie/Teddy was Theodore in the book. It makes me feel like Evelyn is the odd (woman) out. I do like Lydia with the sibset as I also like Rosamund although I think Lydia might fit just ever so slightly better.
Other ideas along this line: Beatrice (my very first thought--no idea why), Abigail, Adelaide, Anneliese, Olivia, Gabrielle, Seraphina, Annabel, Heloise, Ramona, Claudia, Cecilia, Philippa, Veronica, Lenora, Cecily, Helena, Linnea, Miriam, Rowena, Suzanne/Susannah, Sylvia, Victoria, Isobel, Violet

三级片电影网站Do any of your kiddos go by nicknames at all?

三级片电影网站1.) we like MAD-a-lin, but MAD-a-line has been growing on me, especially since the first pronunciation sounds a but too similar to Evelyn. I know there are many variations of this name and some are quite popular (two are in the top 100, I believe), so they might be the next ones to go. I love Caroline, but my cousin's name is Carolyn and we see her quite a bit. Allison is pretty, but not my style. I considered Lillian, and Vivian too, for a brief moment but nixed it for the same reason you mentioned. It's also pretty popular, which we like to avoid if we can (I'd wanted to name my daughter Evelyn since I was a little girl and found out it was my grandmother's middle name- so the popularity wasn't a huge issue there) I have to admit I really do like MaryJane, but I don't think I could bring myself to use it. Its unfortunately become ruined by the slang term.

2.) I never noticed the Little Women connection! We actually considered naming Evelyn Elisabeth, but we wouldn't have used the nickname Beth. I like your suggestion of Beatrice- although I am a bit worried about peoples' perception of it being used by the 'yuppie' set. This never occurred to me, but my husband is worried about it for some reason.

Thank you for the suggestions! My favorites are Ramona, Claudia Cecilia (patron saint of music=big plus in my eyes), Helena, Linnea, Susannah, and Violet. You seem to have our style down pat :)

Yes, Theodore goes by Teddy or Tad (he is Theodore Albert). We introduce him as Theodore and call him by his full name occasionally, but his friends call him Teddy. We sometimes call Evelyn Evie (EHV-ee), but not enough for her to go by it regularly. And Josephine is 18 months, so she's got a variety of baby nicknames given by her brother and sister: Jojo, Josie, and Posey. I wouldn't say that nicknames are a necessity for me, I just happened to pick names that lent themselves to cute nicknames :) baby #4 doesn't necessarily need to have a nickname, but I was thinking of using Maisie as a nickname for Margaret, Lucy for Lucile, Kate for Catherine, and possibly Rosie for Rosamund.

Thanks for the help!

Reading just your question title, my immediate thoughts were Beatrice/Beatrix and Cecily/Cecilia. (Those two pairs of names reside right next to each other in my brain, for some reason.) Charlotte also fits stylistically, but is perhaps higher on the popularity trajectory than your other names (which are all lovely, by the way!).

Of your list, I love Lydia and Margaret. I like the others, too, with the possible exception of Lucil(l)e (just not a fan of the "loo" sound) and Madeline/Madeleine (spelling _and_ pronunciation confusion). In the sibset, unfortunately I think Theodore and Josephine together rule out Margaret, due to the Little Women overload (or looking at it from the other direction, for leaving Evelyn out of the Little Women theme).

三级片电影网站I don't think Rosamund is necessarily too much for a little girl -- she can always be Rosie until she "grows into" her full name.

I like your taste :) I adore Rosamund, and I find it very appealing that it is so extremely rare—a huge plus in my book. I agree that if it's too much name for her as a little girl, Rosie is an easy nickname. I love Catherine in that spelling, and Clara, Lydia and Margaret are all favorites as well. I like Annemarie, though I prefer the hyphenated spelling Anne-Marie. Annamarie seems a little less natural to me—the linguistic purist in me wants the endings to match (Anne Marie and Anna Maria). Lucile is fine, but still dated to me, and generally makes me think of the mother on Arrested Development (a snobby alcoholic old lady), though that spelling also puts me in mind of Lucile Packard, the philanthropist. Madeline and Madeleine are nice names that are just not as interesting to me, mainly because of the association with more creative variants like Madalyn and because I feel like I hear them a lot. I prefer the French spelling Madeleine, or, if you're feeling more adventurous, Magdaline.

三级片电影网站Not sure if you realized it, but the first three names are from the 1920's and 1930's, very popular with my relatives in Brooklyn, NY.  Annemarie  fits very well with the slightly antique feel.  That's my cousin Teddy, mothers best friend Evie, and cousin Josie, and Annemarie could stay a full name or take either part.  Margaret is also nice, but be prepared for many many nicknames, Peggy among them.

三级片电影网站By 'the first three names', do you mean Theodore, Evelyn, and Josephine, or Annemarie, Annamarie, and Clara? I know they're all relatively "old fashioned", but that's just the style my husband and I tend to like (unfortunately it seems to be trending right now, which is a bit of an oxymoron if you think about it). Anyways, we would probably use a nickname for Margaret, so I don't think people would call her Peggy if she already went by a nickname. By the way, your family tree has some great names! :)

You have so many great names, it's really hard to pick!  I think Lydia and Margaret are probably my favorites, though Clara rates quite high too.  I think the only reason Clara doesn't make my top tier is your preference for 3 syllables.

I also like Rosamund and I don't think it is too much for a little girl.  The nicknames Rosa and Rosie certainly help to lighten the feel of the name if you find it necassary.

I prefer Annamarie over Annemarie.  They are both pretty, I just don't love them as much as the others.

I like Catherine a lot, though I would personally probably avoid the "ine" group of endings.  Not a deal breaker of course, but it is something I noticed.

三级片电影网站I want to like Madeline more than I do, but I'm a bit over the Maddy names as a group.  It's a shame it has become so overdone in my area, because it is a very nice name.

Lucile, just never been one of my favorites.

When I read the title of your thread, before reading the body of your question, my first thought was Clara, so that would be my first vote.

Rosamund and Margaret would be my next picks. Lydia seems to be making a comeback on this site - I think it's lovely too.

三级片电影网站Updated list, with all your lovely suggestions taken into consideration:

-Annemarie

-Clara

-Lydia

-Catherine "Kate" (I really like Kitty, but I don't know how much I like Teddy and Kitty in a sibset)

三级片电影网站-Rosamund "Rosie"

-Margaret (can't decide which nickname is my favorite- I think Maggie is the most 'modern', meaning it's the one that's the most widely accepted for young girls, but I adore Madge, Margie, Maisie, and Margo. What are your favorite nicknames for Margaret?)

-Ramona

三级片电影网站-Claudia

-Cecilia "Cici"

-Helen "Ellie", "Nell" or "Nellie"

-Sylvia

I know most peoples' lists get shorter with time, but you guys have suggested so many great names that I hadn't even considered. Please let us know your thoughts!

My favorite nicknames for Margaret are Maisie, Mae, Meg, Maggie, and Daisy (in that order).

三级片电影网站While I love Margaret, I still feel that "poor Evelyn is left out" Little Women feel to the set.

I hesitate with Rosamund with a Josie/Posey/Rosie thing going on. (although I like the set--you might be able to get away with Sadie for Rosamund--the letters are there)

三级片电影网站Catherine feels just a little tame with the set (you could also use Kit instead of Kitty), but it does work.

三级片电影网站Is there any story for Annemarie? I want to like it, but I can't quite reconcile it with the sibset for some reason.

The rest all go very well. And I applaud your husband being willing to do all those names! Many are on my favorites list, but have been vetoed by hubby. *sigh*

三级片电影网站You're right about the Josie/Posey and Rosie thing... Rhyming names aren't really my style. I guess I hadn't  thought of a nickname since I was just so set on Rosamund, but once I realized that it might be a bit much for a little girl, the first nickname that came to mind was Rosie. I suppose I could also use Romy, or Sadie, of course :)

三级片电影网站I guess I'm going to have to get rid of Margaret... Definitely a middle name option though!

三级片电影网站No story behind Annemarie, I just wanted something uncommon and unexpected for a baby. I can see why you have a hard time picturing it with our other childrens' names as it may not be the best match, but for some reason I really like it. I don't like Anne on its own, but I love Annemarie. Funny how that works.

三级片电影网站Yeah, I was surprised too, to be honest. If I was to tell him one day that I was going to name the baby Ramona and that was it, he probably wouldn't be as willing. I think he likes a lot of names in theory, but has a hard time when it comes to actually using them. Case in point: all three of our children. Luckily for me, he has an open mind! Thanks for the input!

January 22, 2014 1:43 PM

Yep--you could absolutely use Romy or Sadie for a nn for Rosamund and avoid the Rosie thing--you'll have to decide and be firm early on with others or she may end up Rosie after all.

Such a shame about Margaret though. Definitely hang onto it for a middle!

三级片电影网站That's funny. Yeah, I'm not a super Anne favorite, but I love Anneliese. Sounds *very* German with our last name though, and we've already used A for a first initial, so I don't know if I could actually pull the trigger on it.

三级片电影网站My husband likes very frilly names and doesn't like anything that makes him think "old lady". *sigh* Good bye: Margaret, Eleanor, Evelyn, Josephine, Ramona, Clara, Helen, Violet, Ruth, Naomi, and so many others that I love.

三级片电影网站I have always loved Ramona!!! And I have a cousin who goes by Marg or Margie as a nickname and it is adorable....

My favorites with your other childrens' names are Lydia, Ramona, and Cecilia. I was debating on whether or not to include Helen, but I decided against it since it has the same ending as Evelyn and for some reason I didn't like that. I really love Margaret, but I can understand you not wanting to use it as the Little Women connection is noticeable enough. However, if the people in your social circle aren't big readers, they might not notice. I would ask a couple of your friends about their thoughts on Margaret with your set and see what they say.

Good luck!

When I first read your kid's names the first idea that came to my mind was Susannah. It has the "n" sound you seem to like in girls names, it's 3 syllables, has a unique initial and a unique ending and generally fits with your style. The only thing with that is nn Susie might come too close to Josie.

But now that I look at your updated list, I am a big fan of Lydia, Cecelia, Helen and Margaret.  I personally didn't make the Little Women connection when I first read it, but quite a few posters have so it might be more apparent than I thought.

三级片电影网站Helen is shorter than the rest, but if you wanted to stretch it to 3 syllables, Helena is also beautiful and comes with a plethora of great nicknames to fit right in with your crew.

Lydia and Cecelia ring very similar for me for some reason (I'd think if you ever used one, it would rule out the other for future use) but they are both really nice and sound excellent with your other girls. (And your son for that matter)

三级片电影网站You've narrowed it done to really great choices.  I don't think you could possibly go wrong. Good luck :) and congratulations!

Narrowed it down to the final four:

Claudia 三级片电影网站(Theodore, Evelyn, Josephine, and Claudia)

Lydia (Theodore, Evelyn, Josephine, and Lydia)

Ramona三级片电影网站 (Theodore, Evelyn, Josephine, and Ramona)

Cecilia (Theodore, Evelyn, Josephine, and Cecilia)

三级片电影网站Thoughts are very much appreciated, as always!

I'm truly torn between Lydia and Cecilia. I feel like I've voted for each before on previous threads, too, so I'm waffling and contradicting myself all at once!

三级片电影网站Lydia seems the most natural fit, and it's a darling, beautiful name with cute nns.

At the same time, I LOVE the name Cecilia. It seems a bit less expected, maybe because it's just a shade more glam than the others?

Claudia is a distant 3rd for me. I like the Idea of it, but I just don't find it as pretty as the others, or in the same league as Josephine and Evelyn. I also can't think of appealing nns.

三级片电影网站I'm just not a fan of Ramona in the slightest. It has fans on this site, though, so if obviously has appeal I'm missing!

三级片电影网站Oh, yay! I love this list!

三级片电影网站I have to admit I'm very struck by the listing with Cecilia, although Lydia and Ramona are close behind. I think of these 4, I would say Claudia comes in last, but not by a lot.

I like you naming style.

Looking at your children's names that you already have I think you should pick a name that is shorter rather than longer in letters. This is because I see Theodore which is 8 letters, Evelyn which is 6 letters and Josephine which is 9 letters. I think you should pick a 7 letter name to tie the names together. Than again I see things like this which other's may not. You could have Lucille instead of Lucile. I prefer the traditional spelling of Lucille rather than Lucile anyway.

Simply out of the names you have listed I like Annemarie, Clara and Lydia. I like Catherine but I prefer the spelling Katherine. I am not that keen on Lucile prefer Lucille. Margaret is nice with the nickname Maggie. Annamarie seems to me has an extra syllable that there is no need for. As for Rosamund I simply don't like the name though I like the nickname Rose. Not keen on the nickname Rosie.

Another thing I think you should go with is having a different first initial than your other children.

Another theme I see is the fact Evelyn and Josephine both end in sound N though slightly different. I like this so I would consider naming their sister a name with an N ending. The only names on your list that fits this theme is Catherine, Madeline or Madeleine. If you use Madeline or Madeleine I think you should go for Madeline with the ending pronounced "line" rather than "lyn" Evelyn ends in "lyn" and therefore to me Evelyn and Madeleine sound to similar. This rules out Catherine for me too since Catherine ends in "thryn" like "lyn".

Names you may like...

三级片电影网站Abigail (Has the 7 letters.)

Adrienne (Follows the N ending.)

Alison or Allison (Follows the N ending.)

Antoinette

Anneliese

Annabelle

三级片电影网站Aveline (Follows the N ending.)

三级片电影网站Beatrice or Beatrix

Bernadette

三级片电影网站Caroline (Follows the N ending.)

三级片电影网站Cecily or Cecelia

三级片电影网站Charlotte

Charlene (Not as classy maybe as Charlotte but does follow the N ending.)

Corinne (Follows the N ending and has 7 letters.)

Eleanor

Isabelle

Helene (Pronounced Huh-leen.)

Lillian (Follows the N ending and has 7 letters.)

Magdalene (Follows the N ending.)

Megan (You might like Megan since it is a form of Margaret. Using Megan follows the N theme.)

三级片电影网站Rosanne or Roseanne (If you like Rosamund you may like this one.)

Rosalind (Another "rose" name.)

三级片电影网站Susannah (I like this name. Means "lily" in Hebrew.)

三级片电影网站Vivian or Vivienne (Follows the N ending.)
